We are less than 60 days away from opening day of the Tailgate Market! 2010 promises to bring lots of positive changes to the market, the first being a new and bigger location! Comporium communications has offered us the lot on the corner of the Johnson and East Jordan streets. This lot is more accessible to main street, offers more visibility, as well as more customer and vendor parking.

Another change this year is the night market. Tuesday nights will be from 3pm to 7pm instead of the usual 7am to 1pm...on that note, Thursday and Saturday markets are now from 8am to 1pm.

Eatherley Hood Schultz is our new market manager. She is a local gal with a passion for local foods, horticulture and farmers markets. Eatherley is responsible for starting up a fabulous market in near Santa Cruz, CA called the Aptos Farmers Market. Her experience in that will help the Transylvania Tailgate Market flourish this season!

A few more new additions to the market this season include a committee that consists of Gail Winterhalter as secretary, Jennifer Bettencourt as treasurer, Anne and Mike Somich as contact, Brittany Whitmire and Andy VonCanon as marketing and advertising, and Casey and Michael Lance as events.

Applications for the 2010 season are available for pick-up at the County Extension office along with vendor rules. Reserved parking for vendors this year will be available at the March 13th meeting.

Well, the season had begun! Everyone is getting their gardens in and soon enough there will be plentiful bounties all around. This year the tailgate market promises more vendors, more variety and more fun! It will once again continue on thru Dec. 19th. The hours for this year are 7am-1pm Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Then in November, it will only be Saturdays from 10am -2pm. Check out our new flyers and cards around town with the new logo too.

We would like to welcome some new vendors this year. Kathy Wright Hardy with Dornick Designs will be there the third Saturday of the month selling her beautiful handmade jewelry (http://www.dornickdesigns.com) as well as Brenda Mullen who makes some yummy homemade body products and also George Lenze with Everett Farms Beef

Olivia Bajek has added a great touch to the market recently. She has been busy making some wonderful body products. Her custom made cart is beautifully done and full of tempting, all natural lotions, oils, balms, bath salts and teas, and much more to pamper yourself with. O Body will make great gifts....just ask Olivia about gift baskets to order. She is in the process of creating some more masculine scents for men as well as some olive oil products. Everything is hand made and its only obvious how much love she puts into it! More great vendors to introduce

Mountain Stic Art joined the market early this summer. They added a very colorful addition to all the veggies and produce and have provided me with some great tank tops! Among the creatively crafted shirts, hats, bibs, baby caps and outfits, visors, shopping bags and more; Joseph Basting makes great stic art from metal and copper. You can also check out his handmade jewelry too. Visit them on Saturdays and I'm sure you'll find something you'll take home! Terry Curtis has been busy sewing. And she should have good reason. Her beautifully designed shopping bags are a popular item on Saturdays. They are unique in each design and make wonderful gifts or just buy one for yourself, then fill it up as you meander around the market.
This is the man that keeps the breakfast burritos going at the market. If it weren't for Calvin and Blanche McCall, then I'd be hunting for eggs elsewhere. Calvin is a veteran of the market. He was one of the original vendors when it was still behind the telephone company, but took a break for a good many years. He started back last summer and has been there ever since. Besides farm fresh eggs from his many chickens, Calvin usually has delicious peaches while they last, the best melons I've tasted all summer and much more to choose from. He always has a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye!

I love what Ann and Marlin Dixon list on their company's card, Dragonfly Studio & Farm; "jewelry, leather, wood, clay & eggs" I think they've got it covered. These are two of the nicest folks I've met. They make some beautiful and unique items. And if you get there early enough, you might be lucky to purchase some fresh eggs. Ann and Marlin are there Saturdays as well, so stop by, chat with them, and browse their large selection of goods.
A recent newcomer to the market this year, is Gail Winterhalter, owner and chef of Tastebud Temptations. Gail will surely satisfy your sweet tooth with her selection of desserts and if that isn't your cup of tea, then maybe you'll find some of her handmade goods more to your taste. Gail is located under the brightly striped umbrella with a smile on her face and a fun apron on!

This is perfect for the mountains! Designer of Mountain Knat Hats, Peggy Cummings, creates one of a kind hats to protect you from those pesky little bugs. They are fun and creative and I'm sure there is one just right for you!

Oh Pat! We all know and love our local goat cheese producer. Pyrwood Dairy is as local as it gets. With over a 150 goats, chickens, geese, Brahman cows, and horses. Her cheese is a staple in our diet as well as many other Brevard locals. Pat is at the market Saturday mornings around nine and always there to 1pm. She makes chevre patties and feta crumbles and every now and then offers beautiful mutli hued eggs from her variety of hens. Visit Pat, talk to her about her goats, and leave with some cheese knowing it was made locally with lots of love. A special treat at the market is wild caught shrimp. And we have Susan Lawrimore of Blue Ridge Shrimp to thank for that. Blue Ridge Shrimp drives to McClellanville, SC every Thursday to purchase fresh, wild caught shrimp. Susan is there on Saturday mornings, smiling and selling her shrimp to her dedicated customers.
Walter and Kitty Hill, of Woodturnings, are delightful to have at the market. Walter turns some of the most beautiful wooden bowls I've ever seen. His bowls are made from english walnut, cypress, apple, cherry, box elder or cedar, and he uses as much local wood as he can. His bowls are unqiue in each of their individual design. They make wonderful gifts! Another young vendor is Matt. He offers plants of ornamental and culinary use, some homemade items, wild harvested berries and some produce from his garden. Although he's a little camera shy, this didn't stop me from getting a photo of what he has to offer.
One of my favorite vendors of the market is Truie. Not sure if this is really his name or if its how you even spell it, but that's what he goes by and I'll just flow with it. He always is smiling and has something funny to tell you. He grows some beautiful flowers and garden produce too. You will find him at the market almost all three days of the week.

Meet more vendors......

This is Betty Hargis. She has been making crafts, potholders, beautiful qulits, rugs, jams, jellies, and much much more for a long time. You'll find Betty at the market with a smile on her face as she sells peanut and pecan brittle, homemade (of course) apple pie, fudge and lemon cookies. She's there early and sticks around until the end. We love her! Meet the Davis family....Dan, Cora, Sophie and Cynthia. They are a great family who's farm is located in Little River. I think they are some very hardworking folks and it shows that they love what they do. And you can taste it in the wonderful food they grow. At the moment, their garden is growing with wild abandon and producing some tasty treats. Come stock up on beets, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, squash, beans, berries, potatoes, and much more. They are a very important to our market, as they are there all three days of the market.

And let me introduce another important farm to the market. The only ceritfied organic farm in the county. Holly Hill farm. Many folks know Bill and Diane Hill. Their 65 acre farm that is also in Little River off of Hart road is a beautiful place to grow the organic veggies that supplement many of the restaurants around Brevard, as well as Poppies. Diane delivers produce to Asheville restaurants and health foods store weekly and I believe the co-op in Hendersonville too. Right now, Holly Hill has peppers of many varieties, both hot and sweet, beautiful red skinned potatoes, loads of fresh basil (think pesto!!!), kale of several types, cherry and yellow pear tomatoes, some okra, garlic, zephyr squash, cucumbers and much more. And don't forget to pick up a bag of her mother's homemade organic oatmeal or peanut butter cookies! This is another woman that produces something beautiful and organic....but not edible. Jan makes gorgeous organic clothing. Both for adults and children, but you will find more stuff for children at the market. Her outfits and hats are made carefully with organic material and lots of love. It's original and adorable. Don't hesitate to ask her about custom orders either. She is making me a new apron as we speak.
A recent newcomer to the market this year is John. His one acre garden is located on Azalea drive in Brevard. Dedicated to practicing organic methods, John has been learning all he can from Bill and Diane Hill, Holly Hill farm. This last Saturday John was offering eggplants, kale, fresh, aromatic rosemary, tomatoes, beans, squash, and a few more garden goodies. Lets support this hardworking, determined young farmers who wants to make a difference of how and where your food is grown.

Busiest Market yet....

This last Saturday at the market boasted 37 vendors! I think that may be a record for this year. Every spot was full from end to end on both sides. Parking was in high demand, but it didn't scare away shoppers, they just got creative and patient. The weather was great! Lots of sunshine and warm temps, unlike last Saturday when it poured all day. Summer is giving us lots of great things from the garden. Produce was plentiful and so were flowers. Tomatoes seems to dominate the tables of local farmers and the berries are in full peak right now. If you aren't the adventurous type to hunt and gather your own, then pay a visit to the market any day of the week and you'll be bound to find some there.
I think these are the first carrots of the season that I have seen at the market. These were grown by the Davis family, who's farm is in little river. Aren't they gorgegous?
Wild Indigo has started growing some unique flowers this year as well. Pictured here are edible Bachelor buttons that would make a great addition to your table, tea, granola, salad or baked goods. The Celosia or aka "cockscomb" are some very interesting flowers. Anne will have those available for sale for another month or so, if they continue blooming that long.
Heirloom tomatoes....the height of summer. Nothing tastes better than a fresh tomato sliced and sprinkled with sea salt, good quality olive oil and some fresh herbs. The Davis family also has several varieties growing and they are starting to take over! Do them a favor and take some off their hands. My favorite are the yellow tomatoes, with a little acidity and lots of fresh sweet tomato flavor!

Rainy day

It started raining at five thirty that morning and didn't really let up until around noon. But it didn't stop the shoppers. They came prepared with umbrellas of all colors and rain jackets. Some just didn't care. It did feel good after the heat. And we did need it.

Every Saturday there are the die-hard vendors who are there early and leave late. Wild Indigo is one of those vendors. Owned by Anne and Mike Somich, who started selling last August and have been there ever since.

Wild Indigo offers baked goods that are created with lots of love, organic ingredients, local produce, and tempting desserts. Locally roasted Brown Bean Coffee is available as well as organic iced mint green tea. A big favorite is the Grizzly Biscuits for the furry four legged shoppers and there are plenty of them!

If you don't have a sweet tooth first thing in the morning, they have now started offering breakfast burritos. The veggie burritos are full of local eggs, squash, peppers, onions, broccoli and cheese while the meat is sausage from either Farside Farms in Alexander, NC or Hickory Nut Gap in Fairview, NC. They are big enough to share with a friend and a steal at five bucks!

Wild Indigo is usually sold out of most things by 11am, so get there early to satisfy your cravings or call them the night before to see what's on the menu and reserve yours.

Welcome to the Transylvania County Tailgate market blog. We are hoping this will expose us to more folks. Its hopping on a busy Saturday morning with new vendors joining us every week. Even on Tuesday and Thursday mornings it has what you need. We now have over 60 vendors selling a wide variety of goods. Please come visit us down behind the library off of Gaston street. Parking is plentiful, there is grass, shade, a couple of picnic tables and sometime Saturday mornings, live music. Hours are 7 am to 1 pm. Remember, buy local!
